Series and parallel capacitors

Formulas, limitations and content checked according to our Editorial method.

Calculate the equivalent capacitance of multiple capacitors in series or in parallel. Accept values like 100n, 47nF, 220pF, 1u.

FAQ

Why does the series reduce capacity? In series, the charge on each capacitor is the same, but the voltage divides. The result is like having a capacitor with plates further apart → smaller capacity.
How do you get a non-standard value? By combining standard capacitors in series and parallel you can approximate values that are not commercially available. E.g. two 100nF in series give 50nF.

Practical rules

Parallel

Capacitors add. Two 100 nF ones in parallel make 200 nF.

Series

The equivalent capacity decreases. Two equal capacitors in series are worth half the capacity, but the tolerable voltage can increase if balanced well.

Format

Accepts pF, nF and µF: 100n, 0.1u, 220p. Because always writing in Farad would be gratuitous cruelty.

How to calculate capacitors in parallel?

C_total = C1 + C2 + ... Capacitance adds up.

How to calculate capacitors in series?

1/C_total = 1/C1 + 1/C2 + ... Capacitance decreases, voltage rating increases.
